Psycho sexual Thrillers | The Grey Matter | Chapter I

Chapter I: The Grey Matter

‘Vinay Sadanand, homicide’ deep baritone voice was enough to put the hawaldar guarding the police cordon at attentive position. He quickly moved away from the gate after official salute. Vinay stepped inside of Agarwal Residence. It would not be an exaggeration of fact if we call the house as palace. The gate itself is broad enough that it can allow 4 cars side by side to pass on at a time. After a modest and well maintained garden a white 3 stored building stands tall to symbolize the power and wealth of recently deceased Rajesh Agarwal, a businessman of 50, who inherited the family business around 15 years back after accidental death of his parents in a car crash.

Inspector Vinay stepped inside and he could smell the uncomfortable stench of death. His 18 years of police career could not give him enough experience to logically explain this smell, which he always fills around a dead body.

The fridge door in the ground floor dining room is ajar and the body of Rajesh Agarwal , the wealthiest timber merchant of this state is lying flat on its face naked. Back part of his head is almost smashed probably by repeated hit from a blunt object. The yellowish light from the open refrigerator turned all the reds to black and somewhat liquefies the degree of gore from the crime scene. Unfortunately, the flashing from the camera of the forensic team suddenly revealed the oozing grey matter from the head.

Vinay looked away only to find young, energetic local officer-in-charge who looked very enthusiastic to demonstrate his analytical skill. In a thoughtful manner he uttered:’ The crime took place around 2 AM in the night in my opinion, the coroner will confirm the exact time though. I have already rounded up and questioned the working servant, driver and maid. None of them stays in the compound after 9 PM. The only outsider apart from Mr. and Mrs. Agarwal stayed in the house during night time is security guard Alamgir and he is missing probably just after the incidence. I have already informed the surrounding police stations about the missing person and asked them to arrest the man at first sight.’
Now Vinay looked at the young chap and smiled in a sarcastic manner. ‘It would be nice if you first introduce yourself to your senior.’ Sorry Sir, Sub-inspector Rajiv Mehra, Kalabadi police station’ Rajiv turned red at his foolishness and embarrassment.

‘Where is your senior officer?’

‘He is on leave for last five days sir. Second officer is supervising the minister’s official visit for election campaign ’

‘Well Rajiv, I need you to stay with me for the investigation. Prove yourself useful. Detective department might use boys like you.’

Vinay carefully stepped over the dead body for a closer inspection. After few minutes he turn towards Rajiv ‘ Well Rajiv, what are your findings regarding this ?’

‘Yes sir, it seems Mr. Agarwal was in search of his midnight snack, he opened the fridge for that, then suddenly the assailant hit him with something heavy from back.’

Vinay looked at the nakedness of the victim and told ’Well certainly he was not looking for anything for any guest I suppose in his birthday suite.’

‘The presence of Mrs Agarwal is also eliminating the chances of any presence of escorts at that time’ Rajiv tried to add value.

‘You will be amazed by the nature of human perversion dear.’ Vinay replied suggestively.

‘By the way, where is Mrs Agarwal? Have you questioned her?’ Vinay turned towards Rajiv.

‘Sir, she is upstairs, she discovered the body and called doctor and police station around 2.30. She is very upset and having a nervous breakdown. A doctor of the forensic team is trying to calm her. If you wish we can see her condition and found out if she is ready for questioning or not.’

‘Later kiddo, she is the only probable major witness at this moment, we need her as calm as she can be.’ Rajiv felt comfortable hearing informal address form his senior.

‘As you wish sir.’

‘Any tress of the murder weapon yet?’

‘No sir, we are searching for it in the house and garden, but no luck yet’.
‘Keep searching, the weapon seems heavy, It must be somewhere around. Tell me about the security guard’.

‘His name is Alamgir sir.’ Rajiv reminds,’ as per the maids in the house, he was in service of Agarwal family from long before of them. We got a picture and his residence addresses from his quarter. We have also recovered his mobile phone in broken condition in the floor. His sim card and the memory card is heavily damaged, but I think we can still recover some data from it. Forensic experts are looking to recover it. I have already informed the concerned police station for his where about.’

‘You made my job easy, well-done officer.’ Vinay looked very pleased. Even a hint of smile could be seen in his face. Vinay could almost see himself 15 years back through Rajiv. The next moment he felt bitter as it also reminds him the person he wants to be and the person he became. Vinay took an oath to serve and protect in his academy, and now what he is doing is just surviving like any other colleagues of his. Surviving through corruption and arse licking of his superior just to float above the water made him a person which is far far away from the person he always wanted to become.

Vinay became unmindful then suddenly his thought brakes with the sound of footsteps coming from the stairs leading towards 1st and 2nd floor. The elderly doctor of the coroner team came near Vinay and recognizes the familiar face as they have encountered in earlier case also.

‘ How are you detective, take care of your health. You are becoming obese every day. Tell me it is not from the alcohol’.
Vinay smiled but not said anything in reply.

‘I made her ready for your firing, but please be gentle while questioning her. She just lost her husband. Alisha is still under heavy mental trauma and is in the need of medical attention.’
‘Mrs. Alisha Agarwal sir, wife of Mr. Rajesh Agarwal’ Rajiv whispered.
‘Come Rajiv, let me show you the most unpleasant part of our job, questioning a widow who just lost her husband’ Vinay steeped upstairs and entered through the door of Agarwal’s bedroom. The dim light of the bedroom almost felt pitch dark to Vinay and Rajiv. When their eyes became familiar with the darkness, they both looked towards Alisha, the recent widow drowned in the sorrow for her loss.
